Welcome to Line Rangers Fan Page

Hello! This blog is dedicated to a fun new game from the LINE Naver company, Line Rangers. It is a type of tower defense game and it is available currently from the Android Play store and Apple App store. The game itself is free, while in-game purchases will cost you.

The game is a ton of fun - I've spent countless hours on it already since its release late February 2014. This blog contains information about the variety of rangers in the game as well as musings about specific stages and other thoughts about my gameplay. The game is hugely popular in Asia (as many of the LINE family games are) so I am creating a place for the English speaking fan base.

Quick Links:
Intro and Playing the Game:
The goal of every stage is to get your rangers to the right hand side of the screen so that you can attack and destroy the enemy tower. The tower is destroyed when the health bar above it reaches 0. When you win a stage, you are rewarded with experience gains to your account as well as experience for each of your team's active rangers. You are also awarded some game gold, then you get a chance to roll on a bonus. Bonus rewards can be more game gold, a chance at various rangers (depending on stages, this varies), or an item to use for assisting you in battle. You are also given a chance after defeating each stage to win some "treasure". There's a small chance that you'll get treasure but it's not known what the chances are, and there are often times you just don't get anything. Treasure awards appear to be completely random. More on Treasures later. Ultimately you want to beat all these stages so you can save Sally the duck from the evil Alien who kidnapped her (as seen in the opening splash screen).

Minerals:
You are given minerals which increase as time passes. When you spend minerals to deploy a ranger unit to fight for you, minerals are deducted from the top right hand bank, and the mineral count will begin to increase over time again.

You'll need to spend minerals to accelerate your mineral production within each stage quickly so you can deploy rangers faster and faster. You can invest in your mineral production up to 8 times per stage, and it is generally smart to do this as early as you can in the stage.

In the Upgrade screen (Main screen > Upgrade) you can choose to use your game gold to upgrade your Mineral Production and Max Minerals. Increasing your Mineral Production will speed up the rate at which your minerals will replenish during battle. Max Minerals increases how many minerals you begin each stage with as well as how many minerals capped. Both of these upgrades will be important once you get to the higher stages of the game, so you will want to make sure you save up some gold to upgrade these features!

Rangers:
The game boasts that there are over 70 rangers in this game. They vary from familiar LINE characters like Brown and Cony, to strange animal friends. Some are just plain silly and not at all good for battle. But they're fun to collect. Each ranger has its own special animation in the game. They have a range of abilities and they fall into one of 5 classes: health, attack, splash, speed, balance. Every ranger also has a star rating, attack speed, and move speed attribute.

 - Star Rating: A ranger's star rating tells you what their default max level is and generally how well the ranger performs. The higher the star rating, the "better" the ranger.  For instance, apples to apples, a 2 star attack ranger will always be more powerful than a 1 star attack ranger. In later stages, you can roll on 3 and 4 star rangers during the bonus roll. I believe 5 star rangers are obtained from the Gacha machine only. In addition, star rating determines a ranger's default maximum level. If you want to exceed past the default max, you need to synthesize the same exact ranger as the one you want to level. That will let you take it up 5 more levels. You can exceed the default max level up to 4 times.
     1 star Max Level = 20
     2 star Max Level = 30
     3 star Max Level = 40
     4 star Max Level = 50
     5 star Max Level = 60

 - Attack/Move Speed: In the early stages you will generally get some Slow, Very Slow or Normal speed rangers. The further in the game you get, generally the faster you want your ranger team to be. A ranger's speed will never change, so leveling up will not make them faster. The only way to get a faster moving/attacking team is to obtain rangers that have a faster attribute. Move speed can sometimes make or break the stage. As you break through enemy defenses, your units need to move toward the enemy tower and take it down before reinforcements can be deployed to stop you.

 - Health: These rangers tend to have more health than others. These beefy rangers are best in the front lines, tanking the enemy units directly. Enemy units will stop moving as long as one of your rangers is present so you always want a health unit at the front of your team taking the big hits.

 - Attack: Attack rangers dish out the most damage to enemy units. Most attack rangers hang out in the back and attack from a range. They don't have a lot of health so make sure there is always a health ranger or some other melee ranger ranger blocking the enemies, otherwise your attackers will be toast in no time. Attack rangers' attack speed varies from very slow to very fast so choose your units wisely. A faster attacking unit will do more damage if you can keep him safe and out of enemy fire.

- Splash: Splash rangers are attack units that hit multiple enemies at a time. They typically hit whatever enemy unit is closest to the left, and whatever is around it. Splash rangers are great for stages where the enemy has deployed a lot of units and they're bunched up in the front. You need to be careful, however. Most splash rangers don't have a lot of health and they need to be fairly close to the enemy to fight. If a health unit dies, your splash rangers may be the next target! Splash rangers are a great tool to have in the later stages of the game.

 - Speed: As the name suggest, speed units move to the front lines very quickly. Most of the time they also attack "fast" or "very fast". These units are great in the earlier stages to get in the enemy's face. They're also useful for holding the line if you need a few seconds to prevent the enemy from advancing too close to your tower. Speed units don't have a lot of health so they can't hold on for very long, but they do have their niche purpose from time to time.

 - Balance: These units are hybrids. They may have higher health than other attack units with decent attack, or their speed might be superior. They have a mixture of good traits but typically they are not better at something than a ranger specifically from that class.

  2. Might want to add that in the recent update, combining the same ranger increases the overall stat and stat increase by 20% each time, up to a maximum of 180%. Taking this into account, maxed out 60/60 four-stars outstat 50/50 5-stars with few exceptions like sorcerer cony

Feasibly this would be for Styne, Ellin, Sindy and Fighter Moon, obtainable by farming boss levels from stage 40 onwards.

    1. This is true. Level 60 four stars do outperform similar classes of Level 50 five star Rangers in most cases, if you are so lucky as to farm 4 additional Rangers of the same type. Exceptions currently appear to be the 4 new rangers (sorcerer Cony, general Brown, opera James, Macho moon). Apples to apples, lv40 to lv40 as well as 60 to 60, the old 4 stars underperform vs. the new 4 stars. 5 star Cony beats all by a mile, hands down.

  4. Thanks for this blog. Informative and well written. Do you have any insight on the Treasure situation? I find it pretty hard to get 100% efficiency. Always missing two 3 star items.

  5. Thanks, javver. I'm glad you found it useful. As far as I know Treasure simply has a small chance to be awarded at the end of every stage. I've had times where I got 3 stars after the very first clear of a stage in that section of the zone; on the flip side, I farmed stages 1 to 4 literally dozens of times and couldn't get my last star, took me over a week of aggressive farming. The randomness of treasure is exactly that - random. :( Not getting it after 50 stage clears does not improve your chances at all. You have the same chance to win a piece of treasure after each clear. To my knowledge, boss stages don't offer you a better shot either, at least in my experience. I farmed 57-60 equally and ended up getting my final star on 59 after something like 10 runs of each stage.
If it's any consolation, Wednesday (JAPAN local time, which is Eastern US+13 hrs) is double treasure treasure chance day. That's the day to farm if you are still missing pieces.

  8. Thanks a lot for your blog. Very useful!

Does anyone know if the 20% stats increase each time the same ranger combined (4 times = 80%) still valid now?

There wasn't any ending dates given last time...

So I'm not sure whether to combine my rangers or to wait for the announcement again to combine.

  9. Hello Huang, welcome. I am pretty sure that the 80% combine bonus still applies. I compared my max level Ellin with a friend who just got all 5 of the Ellin Rangers required for max recently and Ellin's attack power is still maxing out the same. It would appear that despite no notification of this still being active, it is still part of the game. I am glad it is because it makes 3 star and 4 star Star Rangers at least competitive!
