Battle Strategies (Normal Single Player Stage Mode)

[June 24, 2014 Update: If you are looking for Team Battle Basics, please check this post. This post below is mostly for single player stage mode, though some concepts apply.]

LINE Rangers is a collection of short stages, and sure, it all seems simple enough. But some of the harder stages that repeatedly wipe out your team may require a little bit of strategy, and perhaps a little exploitation of the way the enemy units work, in order to succeed.

Three main things that you can do to plan out your strategy:
1. Select an Opener
2. Choose the right Team Composition
3. Determine which items and Friends you need to use

OPENERS

How you spend your first 3000 minerals, or "Opening strategy", can make or break your game very quickly.

Pay As You Go
This is how many of the earlier stages will go. You can deploy a health unit and some attacker units to hold up the enemies while casually upgrading your minerals until you hit the max. At that point you can produce your units much more quickly and eventually overwhelm the enemy line. This method works fine if the stage is not difficult or if your team is much stronger than your enemies.

Powerlevel Minerals:
Stages that start off slowly, have a very long pathway, or just start with a few enemies at a time offer you time at the start to do nothing but invest in upgrading your minerals. Simply do not spend any minerals on deploying units until you get to max level minerals
  - Levels with very few enemies at the start allow you to powerlevel minerals and then immediately start producing health units to block their access to the tower.
  - Levels with many enemies at the start and a long pathway may require you to powerlevel your minerals -- even at the cost of allowing them to beat up your tower a little bit -- and accumulate the max amount of minerals before quickly deploying all of your units at the same time in order to kill them all at once. If you have a lot of enemies coming at your tower or already beating up your tower and you've spent all your initial mineral on upgrades, you should not deploy units one at a time as the enemies will all gang up on it and instantly kill it. If you wait until you have enough minerals to deploy your health unit and multiple attackers, you can effectively deal with the gang.

Upgrade & Reset
Sort of a combination of the two openers above, this plan typically starts one of 2 ways:
  - You spend all of your minerals powerleveling minerals and there are so many enemies on your front doorstep that there's no way to deal with them. You use a tower repair to buy you time, and/or use a tornado to whisk all your enemies away so you can start producing a ton of units to meet up with them.
  - You spend all your initial minerals producing rangers to tank the front line, dealing some damage and holding the enemy at bay as much as possible. When the numbers start to overwhelm you at your tower, you abandon all your units and spend money only upgrading minerals. When you reach max, you can use a tornado to knock them all back. Then you start deploying your own team to really beat them down. Make sure you save your Missile! You can maximize the damage it deals by using it right after a tornado so it hits everything.

That's all for now on openers. Other opener thoughts/comments/additions - feel free to drop me a comment.

TEAM COMPOSITION

Most teams consist of a tanking health unit and some attacking units. Units that hit in melee range have the unique job of holding the front line against the enemy. Health, balance and speed units vary in cost so you will have to decide whether you can afford to include expensive melee units in your team for any particular stage. If the stage features ranged enemy units, you need to know that your front line is going to die and won't be dealing much damage. Ranged units are best for those situations. If the stage is packed with a lot of enemies coming at you all at once, splash damage units are enormously helpful. However, splash damage units have a longer cooldown (amount of time until you can deploy the same ranger again) so you have to pair them other units to help attack.

Scott costs 40 minerals while you upgrade
Using Lowbies/Bait/Decoys/Fodder
This is a hugely popular strategy that many people use to help with difficult levels. The idea is to put one or more 1-star rangers that can move very fast and cost very little on your team (Bella, Scott and Glenn are good choices for this). This low-level unit is going to be your sacrificial ranger. You deploy the lowbie ranger over and over to keep the enemy front line busy hitting something and prevent them from getting closer to your tower.
Examples: Level 57-59 all feature a mini-boss enemy who heaves a trash can at your team. Level 60 features the bald elephant who slaps your team with steak and will just about instantly kill everything it hits. In these cases, since everything in the front is sure to die anyway, why bother spending precious minerals on expensive health rangers? Deploying a lot of lowbies will bait the enemy into stopping their procession and their big nasty attacks will just kill the throwaway rangers. You save your minerals and protect your real assets: your ranged attackers.

All your lowbies (Very Fast move speed recommended) should be the first to meet the enemy

Mini-boss wailing on Health unit (Frog Brown) and lowbie Scott while ranged attackers safely bring the pain.

ITEMS AND FRIENDS

Knowing when you need some outside assistance to get past a rough patch can also save you from a loss.

Determine when you are the most vulnerable and can use some extra free rangers. (at the start while you powerlevel? Or maybe later when you have a lot of enemies to deal with?)

Are you hitting a wall where a boss is almost dead but you don't quite make it before a new stream of enemies starts to come at you? You might be able to save yourself with meteor or ice. Thomas the ghost deals a bit of damage to all enemies on the screen and also slows them down for a little while.

Always use your Missile to produce the biggest damage. Make sure you have someone in the front to hold the enemies so they stop walking. If there are ranged enemy attackers (like blue mages, dragons, lizards, etc.) wait until they reach the furthest point and stop walking so the Missile will hit them too. If you are opening with an Upgrade & Reset, wait until the Missile is ready before you use tornado. Fire the Missile immediately after using tornado to hit everything. Missiles do not damage the enemy tower, so don't bother!

Timing of these things will greatly depend on your knowledge of how the level is supposed to go. If you are not sure or if the heat of battle makes you forget everything, try YouTube! Many others have done us the favor of recording every stage of the game. Look them up and study when things happen and plan out how you will deal with them.

  1. TREASURE

Sometime is best to spend your feathers and time to collect the treasure items to help you with following levels. However, you (we) only able to see its ability clearly if we collected the treasure upto 100% efficiency. It may be time consuming, but may-or-not worth it - but for me, it's worth it.

Collecting these ★3 per item per stage is not that difficult. At certain stages, some monster can be very difficult. So, spend it on a stage that you find it easy to clear to gain the treasure item - although I know is best on boss stage, so we can gain 4★ rangers to synthesis our rangers for exp/level up. But if it's hard, try easier stage.

  2. Good point about treasures. They are very helpful indeed. This post specifically is about battle strat, however. Treasures can be a whole topic on its own! Thanks for listing it out! :)

  4. I hit a wall at stage 57, until someone pointed out the strategy of spamming scott and bella throughout the stage, even when upgrading mineral charge level. Helped me get to stage 63 in one go.

    1. Up until then I was relying on only rangers: Masked moon for absorbing hits and Clara for splash.

Also a tip for farming styne on stage 48: no enemies appear until you deploy your first ranger, so you can fully upgrade minerals and wait full minerals before sending anybody.

    1. Don't upgrade your minerals. Start with Cobe and Clara or Macho Moon and Clara. Sindy and Ellin are also helpful but Clara will be great to put out as soon as possible while someone else tanks the flying bug far away. Play the whole stage at level 1 minerals if you must. It's too little space to afford upgrades.

    2. thanks panicbutton! i have pass through the stage with your advice and friends help. now currently at stage 92 where i am stuck again.. i am so close to sorcerer corny!! any golden advice?

    3. I am glad you got through it! You're really close! For 92 I wrote some notes about how I did it here: http://linerangers.blogspot.com/2014/04/difficult-stage-altar-of-flame.html
      92 is really tough!

    4. hi panicbutton, do u mean i start with the lowbies and clara and eillin than when enemies are near, i use tornado knock them back to their castle immediatly use ice to freeze them, than clara and eillin will attack them?

      Delete
    5. No, don't immediately freeze them at their tower. Continue to send your Rangers after tornado and wait until the blowtorch enemy is about to meet your Rangers (the boss should already be in front of your lowbies). Use ice when the blowtorch enemy is at the front with the boss so Clara and Ellin and friend/sidekick are all there and will hit all of them.

  11. i was thnking maybe my rangers level are not high enough for this level, have been just playing for a week, maybe i am pushing too much for the sorcerer..what do u think?
my clara is level 51,sindy is level 44,honey level 37,eillin level 45,opera james level 41..
should i just focus on leveling my rangers so they become stronger first?is sorcerer very hard to get from gatcha?

    1. Sorcerer Cony (SoCo) is one of the top 5 best Rangers so everyone wants her. Those levels are pretty low. It sounds like it would be very challenging to get to 100 if you've played only a week. 97, 98, 99 and 100 are all pretty hard unless you have fast mineral production as well. If you can level up more, keep trying. Don't stress though, the game is still doable without SoCo just more challenging.

  12. What is the benefit of upgrading max mineral capacity? I keep avoiding to upgrade max mineral because I think it will make me longer to upgrade mineral production to lv 8 for my opening.

PS: I keep trying to post as name/URL, but it never get posted/published

    1. Well, yes, on one hand if you don't upgrade it you won't have to spend as much to upgrade in the stage but one of the things about some difficult stages is that the first set of minerals is the most important. If you start the stage with 1500 minerals you can send out more units at the start vs. if you only had like 850 minerals at the start. In general I ha E noticed if you upgrade max and production side by side, timewise it really doesn't take you longer to get to 8. The rate increases as you upgrade; I always feel like it's the same to get to 8 no matter what my level is. It's probably proportionate.

    2. Thank you! I'll try to have a research about time required to upgrade all the way to lv 8. Having max mineral lv 18 now, will use a stopwatch to count time, then upgrading to 25 and try to count again.

      Delete
    3. My curiousity now gone! With mineral limit treasure maxed out and mineral production lv 41, I have 670 max mineral on lv 8 and my limit is lv 18, time to upgrade is roughly 9 seconds. I upgraded to lv 25, have 770 max mineral on lv 8, time to upgrade is 10 seconds. Mineral production speed seems to not increasing. Now I wonder how to beat stage 89-92 without friends help.

Currently, I have Clara 55, Songster Cony 48, Thunder Brown 44, Charismatic Jessica 56, Honey 48, Sol 15, Luke 1, Legend Boss 1, and a lot of lowbies.

  13. Does Thomas hits enemy twice when combined with Tornado?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, it is possible to do so. On stages with long paths if you time it so that Thomas passes before the Tornado pushes them back, Thomas can hit them again when they are near the tower. Takes some practice to do it.

  15. hi i have a question regarding combining materials (to level-up the rangers), is it better to combine using higher level ranger as the material (not the one we want to level up), for example which one is better?combining a lvl 40 red brown with a lvl 1 vlad, or combining a lvl 40 red brown with a lvl 10 vlad, or they both have the same effect? thx

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If I understand you correctly, it's very easy to test it yourself to see. Combining a higher level ranger into a lower level ranger gives you more experience than the experience that the one being combined contains, but it will just cost you a bunch of coin.

Level 1 ranger eats level 30 ranger, and will become level 33, not level 30.

      Delete
    2. sorry i think my example is wrong :). what i mean is:
      1. combining a lvl 40 red brown with a lvl 15 vlad
      2. combining a lvl 40 red brown with 15 lvl 1 vlads

which of those two will give more exp to the red brown?or do they both give the same amount of exp?thanks :)

      Delete
    3. I've only done this with level 1's and max level 10's (back when 10 was max for one star rangers) and it was more cost efficient to combine a level 10 than a whole bunch of Level 1s to get to the same amount of experience. Not sure if it scales up the same way, but at level 10 that's what my conclusion was.

    1. Depends on what the guy is into, really. If you like em slim and curvy in all the right places, Sindy. If you like em short and plump, Ellin.
I mean. Um. Sindy is higher damage, longer range, but costs more. They're both good.
